National Early Years Workforce Strategy

What is the Early Years Workforce Strategy?

The Australian Government is working with states and territories to develop a national Early Childhood Workforce Strategy. This Strategy is looking at the early childhood development workforce, of which the early childhood education and care workforce is an important consideration. Specifically the Strategy will complement, and build upon, existing Commonwealth, state and territory government measures aimed at improving the supply and quality of the early childhood education and child care workforce.

What will the Strategy do?

  • The Strategy will address three key areas relevant to early childhood education and child care:
  • attracting, recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce
  • equipping our workforce with the right skills and knowledge
  • ensuring a focus on regional, remote and Indigenous issues.

Why do we need a Strategy?

The Strategy will help build a highly-skilled and capable workforce, which is essential in fostering high-quality services and achieving the best outcomes for children.

The Strategy will provide the first commitment by all governments to an agreed vision and long-term framework for the early childhood education and child care workforce. It will be used to develop immediate areas of action and longer term policy options.
