National Early Childhood Development Strategy - Investing in the Early Years
On 2 July 2009, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) endorsed the National Early
Childhood Development (ECD) Strategy - Investing in the Early Years.
The National ECD Strategy provides the framework for government and community response
to achieve the vision that, by 2020, all children have the best start in life to create a
better future for themselves and for the nation.
The Strategy will help all levels of government to build a more effective and better
coordinated, national early childhood development system to support the diverse needs of
Australian children and their families.
The Strategy identifies the outcomes that all governments are seeking to achieve for
children by 2020, and captures existing commitments, areas for immediate action and future
areas for reform. Vulnerable children, strengthening the workforce across early childhood development
and building better information and a solid evidence base.
The Commonwealth Government is working closely with state and territory agencies to
develop advice for COAG's consideration on implementing the National ECD Strategy.
