Local emergency arrangements for State Floods and Cyclone Yasi
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations has invoked Local Emergency provisions under
Family Assistance Law for all Child Care Benefit Approved child care services for states affected by the floods
and Cyclone Yasi. The local emergency arrangements have been in place in Queensland since 20 December 2010, and
in areas of NSW and Victoria since Jan 2011, as a result of the floods.
The local emergency arrangements also apply to those more recently affected by cyclone Yasi. This means if your child or children are prevented from attending approved child care, or your service is closed
because of the local emergency, then Child Care Benefit can be paid if the service charges you a fee for the missed sessions of child care.
Special Child Care Benefit is also available to cover up to the full cost of child care in an approved child care
service for families faced with a hardship event that affects their ability to pay their usual child care fees. A
natural disaster such as flooding and cyclone is an example of a hardship event.
The Hon Kate Ellis MP, Minister for Employment Participation and Child Care, provided information on the additional
assistance available to families during the local emergency affected by the floods and cyclone. This has been emailed to all Queensland CCB Approved
child care services, please view this information via the link below.
