National Families Week

National Families Week, being held from Sunday 15 May to Saturday 21 May 2011, celebrates the vital role that families play in society and highlights the importance of giving every child a happy and healthy childhood.

This year's theme for National Families Week is: 'Sticking together: families in good and tough times'. It encourages everyone to think about the sort of things that makes their family strong in good and challenging times, whatever their circumstances.

National Families Week provides us with an opportunity to look at how we can support each other, in our families and in our communities, through the ups and downs of everyday Australian life.

One of the highlights of National Families Week is the participation of local councils, schools, community organisations, companies and individuals in events to celebrate the week.

Information on events in your community can be found through the National Families Week website

National Families Week is timed to coincide with the United Nations International Day of Families on 15 May. This day is observed by the United Nations to mark the importance that the international community places on families as the most fundamental units of society, as well as to show concern about their situation in many parts of the world. The UN theme for the 2011 International Day of Families is 'Confronting Family Poverty'.

National Families Week is coordinated by Families Australia, an independent, peak, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the needs and interests of families. The Australian Government provides funding to Families Australia, through the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, to run National Families Week each year.
